Israel’s recent abduction of a Lebanese national from Batroun has shocked Lebanon, sparking an international outcry and prompting the Lebanese government to file a formal complaint with the United Nations. Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati, calling for a swift UN investigation, has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to pursue urgent legal action through the United Nations Security Council. The abduction took place in a predominantly Christian town, underscoring its significance as it occurred far from the traditional conflict areas near Lebanon’s southern border.

Israel asserts that the detained individual is a “senior operative” of Hezbollah, a claim Lebanese officials have dismissed, insisting he is a civilian naval officer. This difference in narratives has only fueled the Lebanese government’s urgency to seek UN intervention. The Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers from UNIFIL are actively investigating the incident, which has been described by Lebanese officials as “unprecedented.”

CCTV footage reportedly shows the man, later identified as Imad Amhaz, being escorted to a waiting speedboat by armed commandos. Witnesses in Batroun report that over 25 heavily armed Israeli soldiers took part in the operation, stirring fears among Lebanese citizens about similar raids in the future. The incident has left Lebanon demanding justice for what it views as a breach of its territorial sovereignty and an affront to civilian rights.

In response to the abduction, Hezbollah labeled the operation a “Zionist aggression” but stopped short of confirming if the abducted man is affiliated with the organization. Lebanon’s Minister of Public Works, Ali Hamieh, cited the National News Agency in reaffirming that the victim is a civilian, a fact he says Israel has disregarded in its narrative.

Lebanese and international journalists covering the abduction have highlighted the dangers of such covert operations in regions far from contested borders. Lebanon argues that this incident poses a direct threat to civilian safety, with local officials calling for greater accountability on the international stage. By filing a complaint with the UNSC, Lebanon hopes to secure international support for its sovereignty and reinforce its stance against foreign incursions.

The international community’s response to Lebanon’s complaint could shape the future of Middle Eastern diplomacy. Lebanon’s swift move to involve the United Nations underscores its intent to prevent further incidents, setting the stage for a high-stakes legal battle over the rules governing territorial incursions and civilian safety.
