The Elders Call for Resuming UNRWA Funding to Avert Gaza Humanitarian Crisis
The Elders, a group of independent global leaders founded by Nelson Mandela, issued an urgent appeal for UNRWA donors to resume funding. This plea comes amid concerns of a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the agency plays a vital role in supporting Palestinian refugees.
Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand and head of The Elders, emphasized the critical nature of UNRWA’s work. “The Elders call on donors to resume funding for UNRWA immediately,” she stated, highlighting the “ever-worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.”
UNRWA’s services, including healthcare, education, and food assistance, are crucial for millions of Palestinian refugees. The agency currently faces a significant funding shortfall, jeopardizing its ability to deliver these essential services.
The Elders acknowledge the ongoing investigations into alleged misconduct within UNRWA. However, they urge donors not to let these investigations hinder critical humanitarian assistance. They argue that withholding funding punishes innocent refugees and exacerbates the already dire situation in Gaza.
The appeal specifically targets major donors like the US, Germany, EU, Sweden, and Japan. The Elders urge them to reconsider their decisions to suspend funding and resume full support while investigations are ongoing.
This renewed call for UNRWA funding reflects growing concerns about the potential consequences of its defunding. It highlights the crucial role the agency plays in maintaining stability and preventing further suffering in Gaza.
