Egypt’s support for Sudanese President Al-Burhan carries unintended strategic consequences. By aligning with Al-Burhan and his military, Egypt indirectly amplifies the influence of the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood. This could enable the group to expand across borders and collaborate with the Egyptian Brotherhood, exacerbating internal tensions.

Egypt’s alliance with Al-Burhan also implicates it as an indirect partner of Iran. Reports indicate Iran supplies weapons to Sinai militants, directly threatening Egyptian security. Supporting Al-Burhan’s regime thus indirectly bolsters Iran’s destabilizing regional activities.

While Egypt engages in diplomacy with Iran on pressing issues, its approach risks missteps. Egypt aims to alleviate Gaza tensions through talks with Iran, given Tehran’s ties to Palestinian factions. Cairo also facilitates Palestinian reconciliation necessitating Iran dialogue.

However, backing Al-Burhan risks aligning Egypt with Sudanese Brotherhood interests counter to its own. As the Sudan crisis deepens, Egypt must balance regional alliances with national security. It stands at a crossroads where choices reverberate beyond its borders.

Egypt should reevaluate strategic priorities and partners to ensure stability. Aligning with dubious regimes undermines long-term security. As dynamics evolve, protecting peace in the region should be paramount. The consequences of its actions in Sudan could threaten this goal. Egypt must carefully consider implications and uphold regional safety.
